State Fair 2011: entries and results

For those of you who have asked me about pictures of my State Fair entries, thank you for your interest (and your patience) :o) If you've visited my blog a few times, you know I like to tweak recipes. I've done so in all of my State Fair entries as well. So whenever you see a link to the source of the recipe, keep in mind that I made some changes.

Without further ado, here they are:

Vegetable Bread (3rd place - ribbon): Carrot Zucchini Banana Oatmeal Bread with Walnuts (aka Many-Splendored Quick Bread from Rose's Heavenly Cakes). The bread I entered has walnuts in it but I forgot to take pictures of it.
Dark Bundt Cake (4th place - ribbon): Minty Chocolate Bundt Cake (adapted from CookiePie's recipe via Epicurious).
Plain brownies (4th place - ribbon): Fudgy Brownies, unfrosted, no nuts (adapted from Nick Malgieri's SuperNatural Brownies).

Layered Bars (5th place - ribbon): Double Decker Walnut Bars (adapted from Flo Braker's Congo Brownies). This entry evoked the most "emotions" in my husband when I told him the results: "What?? Fifth place?? Those are really really good!" Ha ha.
Banana Bread (no ribbon): No Nuts Banana Bread (adapted from The Cake Bible). I baked this a couple of times but forgot to take a picture of the loaf I entered. The above picture is that of Banana Bread Revision 1 :o)
Chocolate Chip Cookies (no ribbon): Thick and Chewy Chocolate Chip Cookies (adapted from America's Test Kitchen).
Dark cookies, flattened before baking (no ribbon): Molasses Cookies (adapted from Dorie Greenspan's Molasses Cookies).

  1. Hanaa,
They all look perfect, which must just show how stiff the competition is. Could I have the recipe for the double decker walnut bars? I didn't taste them, but, judging from their looks, I'm in your husband's camp--these look like blue ribbon bars!

  3. I am happy to see your entries! All of them look blue ribbon worthy to me! Especially the bars and the perfect looking brownies! How do you cut your bars and brownies? I use a measuring tape for mine, but still have issues! I think a blonde brownie on the bottom with a dark chocolate Brownie on top that looks as perfect as yours does should not be beat! I would love to taste all the ribbon winner's desserts!

  4. Oh wow... look at you go! We are having a arroz con pollo contest here in Tampa in a couple of weeks and I'm still on the fence about entering it...

I should take some of our courage and just do it.

  8. I agree with Marie, everything here looks award-winning to me! I admire your courage to put your creations out there to be judged. I love the crust on your banana bread--it looks so smooth and glossy I just want to dig in! Congrats for winning so many awards.

  9. What an amazing selection of cakes and cookies! It kept going and going down the page. You must have pretty stiff competition in your area. You would definitely have won in our Fair!

:( About the winning CCC, it DOES have a giant crater!!! Totally underdone I'll bet! Good eye! (Maybe they know the judge???) ;)
I do see I only "shot" one of yours! I must have stood too close on that shot.
I know you'll get some good pics! Can't wait to see them!
