HCB - Free Choice: Chocolate Streussel Coffee Cake

The Heavenly Cake Bakers got to pick their own recipe for this week, yay! A few weeks ago, the group made a Chocolate Streusel Coffee Cake which I missed. Everybody raved about it so it was high on my todo list. Now I understand what they were talking about. It's amazing.

The cake's crumb is soft and tender. And the flavor is awesome, buttery, sweet, with a slight tang. And then the chocolate streusel part... yum, chocolatey with a hint of cinnamon. I think the cake part would be great if you'd like a change of pace from a traditional yellow butter cake.

Since I don't have a 6-cup Bundt pan, I baked the recipe in 3 mini loaf pans. These pans have a dark finish so per Rose's instructions, I lowered the oven heat by 25 degrees.

Here's an inside look at the cake. Unfortunately, my streusel didn't match the wavey look in the book but it still tasted the same :o)

I couldn't wait to try this cake. As soon as it was cool enough, I had to cut a few slices. It smells so buttery. I love it when the edges are still crisp which is why I like to taste butter cake on the day it is baked.

Final thoughts/tips:
  • Hubby liked it a lot, and gave it an 8 to 9 out of 10. So that's an average of 8.5 out of 10. He likes cake that's soft and fluffy, so this cake rated very high :o)
  • The only change I made to the recipe is reduce the cinnamon to 1/8 tsp.
  • For next time, I'll add orange zest to the batter because I really like chocolate and orange together. I still vivid memories of the True Orange Genoise.

  2. Ohhh I was between this one and the cake I ended up baking, mainly because I got lazy and had like a gazzilion things to do over the weekend, so I choose the easy way out. But, I need to bake this cake Eventually, since everyone raves about it.

  3. I do like the look of your mini loaves with the chocolate "bar" in the middle. Orange zest in the batter sounds good, too--I found the cake a little bland, so an extra flavor hit really appeals.

  5. Is it me or does that cake look like it's smiling?

I wish I could join you in HCB but I am grouped out. Can't keep up, and am still tempted to join more. But you're inspiring me to make more out of the book, which is terrific.
