Rose's Crescents

Jenn and I both own a copy of Rose's Christmas Cookies. Neither one of us had baked from it much so we decided to pick a couple recipes and bake them together. The first recipe is Rose's Crescents: butter, almonds, and cinnamon sugar. Need I say more? :o)

Rose's Crescents dipped in cinnamon sugar

I don't think I've ever made cookie dough this fast. Everything goes in the food processor and the butter can be used cold. Let the dough firm up in the fridge for a couple hours, or do as I did and put it in the freezer for 15-20 minutes.

Once I shaped the cookie dough into little crescents, I compared them against the photo in the book and had my doubts they'd turn out. Mine looked so skinny.

Before baking
I should have known better than to doubt Rose's recipe. Soon after they went into the oven, magic started happening, and slowly but surely, they started to resemble the cookies in the book and "fattened" up quite a bit. Yay!
After baking

After a quick dip in cinnamon sugar, they were ready. The aroma of the butter and the cinnamon sugar was just too strong to resist, so I ate one two while still slightly warm. Oh my! It's buttery, and just melts in your mouth. How can something with so few ingredients taste so wonderful? Thanks for another great recipe, Rose. I now wish I hadn't made just 2 dozen cookies (40% of the recipe).

Bon appetit!

Final thoughts/tips:
  • I served these cookies along side a plate of Cinnamon Rolls and a nice cup of Moroccan-style tea. My husband and his friend enjoyed them a lot. The rating for these cookies: 8 out of 10. Hubby found them a bit too sweet, but that was my fault because I dipped the cinnamon sugar 2 to 3 times because it kept "melting" onto the cookie. I should have let the cookies cool a little longer. I guess I couldn't wait :o)
  • I really liked these cookies a lot. The food processor almost makes this child's play. They're so simple but pack a lot of flavor from the toasted almonds. The texture is wonderful too; they just melt in your mouth. Next time, I'll add some orange zest to the dough.
  • Changes: used whole toasted unblanched almonds instead of sliced blanced almonds. Added a little vanilla to the dough.
  • Each cookie weighs 10 grams (pre-baking).
  • You can find the recipe for this cookie in Rose's Christmas Cookies.

    1. Good to hear from you, ECL!! To answer your question, no, we're not baking our way through Rose's Cookie book. It's just a book we both own but haven't baked much out of. And we happen to like baking together :o)

  4. Hanaa, they looked great. They are so even - love all the shots of the cookies pre-baking. I did use the almonds with skins for mine as well (too lazy to blanch them!). I still want to add almond extract next time :).

  5. These look great Hanaa! I saw Rose's Christmas Cookie book in our bookstore but decided not to get it first since it was already post-Holiday season. Good to see that some of the cookies can be made anytime of the year! Will have to get it now :oP
